The countdown is on! There are only 2 weeks of classes left this semester, and graduation is just around the corner. Papers and presentations are due, and the library is busy with research and reserves.

Remember that course reserve articles can be read online from anywhere on campus or off. Just go to the library main page at http://www.lambuth.edu/academics/library/library.html, click the Find Course Reserves link (in the middle under the Library Resources heading) and search by your instructor's name. When the list of reserve materials appears find your article (make sure that it's identified as an Electronic Reserves Item before you click the link. Many reserve articles also are shelved as hard copies at the circulation desk). Just click the title, then the link to pull up a .pdf of the article which you may read and/or print out. If you have any questions, just call the library (425-3289) and we'll be happy to help!

PLEASE NOTE:

Electronic reserves are available for relatively short articles only, not entire books.
You will be asked to enter your ID number and last name before the article loads.

Also please remember that with the end of the semester all library items are due the last
day of classes, Monday, April 27. If any materials needed after that date, please come in and make arrangements with Circulation.

SPRING IS HERE!

It's already April, and Easter is upon us. On Thursday, April 2, we will have John and Hugh Bannister and Carolyn Tomlin in our library at 3:30 to talk about Nonna Bannister, a Ukranian teenager who was forced into a labor camp during the Holocaust and survived with a diary chronicling her experiences, which has been recently published. The book is a fascinating document that sheds new light on the conditions of both Jews and non-Jews during this time of upheaval in Russia and Germany.

And if you're downtown on Thursday at noon, come to the Jackson-Madison County Library to celebrate National Poetry Month. Library Media Center coordinator Jonathan Orr, and Cataloging Librarian Clint Underwood, along withSteven Fonville and Ryan Guth will join faculty from Union and Lane to read poetry of Edgar Allan Poe as they commemorate the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth. Dessert and coffee will be provided - feel free to bring your lunch with you.

Besides being National Poetry Month, the first week of April is also Library week, so come check out our new displays and enjoy a book or video at your library!

REMINDER: WATCH OUT FOR VIDEOS!

Several videos have recently been found shelved in the book stacks. Please remember that videos have their own space! Make sure to shelve videos on the rotating racks in the reference area, not on the regular collection. And remember, there are 2 kinds of videos: leisure, which have smiley face labels on the spine, and are shelved next to the OPAC on the first floor; and more academic videos, which are shelved on the rotating racks.

March is Women's History month, and besides our display of women's authors, and the return of our famous facts quiz, we'll be showing movies based on books by women authors: Pride and Prejudice, starring Kiera Knightly on March 20, and The Secret Life of Bees, starring Queen Latifa, on March 27. Due to spring break we will not show movies on the first and second Fridays in March.

And speaking of spring break, hours for the week may be made up during any daytime hours. If you need to come during evening hours to make up time, please contact me so we can work out hours and days. And if you're going to be around spring break and want to work some, we'll be here and we'll have work for you!

Reminder

You know you're in West Tennessee when it's 17 degrees on Tuesday and 68 degrees on Saturday, like it's going to be this week. If the weather has got you down and you're feeling sick-ish, remember, we love you, but not your germs! Plan to stay home if you're sick... and please let me know by email (wood-h@lambuth.edu, library@inbox.com) or phone (425-3289, x1231) so we can cover your shift.

And just a reminder - please don't forget your check-in list for the beginning of your shift:

Check to make sure paper is filled in the copier and the circulation area printers,
Check headcount sheet and fill out if necessary,
Check with all library staff to find out if they have work that needs to be done,
Shelve any books that are waiting to be shelved,
Check to make sure that no RESERVE books are shelved incorrectly in the shelving area.

If no other work needs to be done, you're welcome to study in the circulation area, just make sure to greet our patrons and put their needs first! Thanks for all your hard work!

Welcome back to life at the Lambuth library! We hope you had a great break and are ready for this exciting new semester. Just to let you know some of the things that are going on: the library will be CLOSED on Saturdays this semester. We'll add 4 hours to Sundays (noon-4) to make up the hours.

There will be a training event on Sunday, Jan. 35 beginning with pizza and soda at 1:30. Sammy Chapman will talk about helping people with Research questions; Jonathan Orr will talk about Media; and Clint Underwood will talk about LC call numbers and technical services. We need to have everyone there!

It looks like we're going to be having movie nights at the library every Friday night, beginning Jan. 16. This month's movies: classic big-screen science fiction films like you've never seen them before! Keep a look out for more information!

We're still short on Sunday workers, so if you think you might be able to work on Sundays, please consider it.

Watch out for events coming up in the library this semester, like the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birth, with a poetry/story reading on Jan 22; Graphic Novels week, with a Faculty Forum presentation on Feb 5, and our READ poster contest - look for more information in the library!

Closing in on the end of the semester...

There's less than a month to go until the semester's over and finals are here! It's kind of hard to believe, but it's been a really busy fall. I'd like to thank you all for all your hard work this semester. We have a fantastic team of workstudy students and the entire library staff appreciates your hard work and willingness to help.

Congratulations to library workstudy students who made it into Who's Who: Megan Baltz, LaBrandon Dates, Barbara Fitzhugh, Joy Igubadia, Lisa Maholmes, Jane Switzer. We're proud of you!

Just a few things that have been updated that I don't want you to miss:

There's now a clock next to the sign-in book to make it easy to find the time. I would like to ask that you use the time on this clock, which has been synchronized with all the rest of the clocks in the library, to sign in, so that we're all on the same time. Also, please remember to write down your time as hours and minutes (for example, 2:30) and I will convert it when I do time sheets.
I've just found out that the circulation computer at the front desk is integrated into our Voyager catalog system, so if a virus happens to get in, our whole system could crash. For this reason, we have been advised by the IT support staff not to put flash drives into the circulation computer. If you need to work on a document, please email it to yourself or put it in storage online to retrieve instead of plugging in a flash drive.
Events still to come at or sponsored by the library include the Three Tenors concert on Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m. Other events on campus that are coming up, many of which involve folks from our workstudy team, include the operetta on 11/18, with the choir concert to follow; an art exhibition opening 11/20; Concert Band concert 11/20; Godspell, beginning 11/20; and the Senoir thesis convocation 12/2. Lots of activities are planned for spring: look for an art exhibition in the library and a contest coming up to design a poster for the READ program!
Please remember: our most important job is customer service. It's never too early or too late to start building a great attitude of customer service. Make it a personal goal to greet every patron who comes in the library, and always ask how you can help. Thanks!

New online email available

Want to get in touch with someone on the library staff? Need to trade hours with another workstudy student, but don't know their email? Now you can log in to the new library online email account and have the address book at your fingertips. Contact Holley at library@inbox.com or wood-h@lambuth.edu to find out how to log in.

Issues to please remember:

when re-shelving, a mis-shelved book is a lost book, so make sure that books are properly in their places. Putting a book back arbitrarily at the end of the row will not do!
when putting books in the holding area at the back of circulation (under the window), please make sure to file them correctly according to the rough sort letters indicated on the shelves. This will facilitate re-shelving later.
when discharging a book, check to make sure that it's not a reserve before you put it in the holding area for re-shelving. All reserves need to go back on the reserve shelf!
reserve books, articles, and music CDs must be discharged before putting back on the shelf. Otherwise the patron accrues fines at an alarming rate!

Don't forget the training in LC catalog Numbers on Sunday, 10/26, and Reference and Research on Sunday, 11/2. There will be a pizza party meet & greet b4 so you can get to know folks you don't know, or see those you don't get to see!

Don't forget to exercise your rights and vote! While it's exciting to cast your vote on election day, you never know what might happen to keep you from getting to the polls. Early voting starts Wed., 10/15. Check out our posters all over the library for details on hours and the address of the election commission, and make your voice heard!

Timesheets, etc.

Timesheets for the workstudy period which just ended have been turned in. The pay date is this coming Friday, October 10, and you may pick up your check in the business office (ground floor of Varnell~Jones Hall) on that day. Your copy of your official timesheet which was turned in to the Financial Aid office is attached to your sign-in sheet in the time log. If you have any questions about your time, please contact me.

Remember the training on catalog numbers that will be available on Sunday, Oct. 26. There will be a pizza party meet & greet before the training, which will probably only last about 1/2 an hour. If there are people you haven't met, please come join us for that part of it if you wish. If you have questions about LC EZ, or if you just want to be more comfortable shelving books or shelf reading, this training is for you! Don't forget to sign up so we have enough pizza for everyone!

I wanted to clarify something about "browsed" books. This term is referring to books that have been left out on tables, but not checked out. The Voyager system is not recording these books as "browsed," so we need to log them for our statiscal gathering. There is a red three-ring notebook in the re-shelving area where these books can be logged. Whenever you take a head count or go around and check the library and see books left out on the tables, please log them in this notebook before re-shelving.

Fall semester 2008!

Looks like fall has finally gotten here. It's still a little warm in the middle of the day, but the leaves are turning and the sky is blue and we're reminded about why Lambuth is such a beautiful place to be in the fall.

I want to thank everyone...
...for those of you who've been faithful library workers in the past, thanks for your warm welcome and your patience. It's not easy to come back and find things completely changed, and you've all been a great help to me and to everyone, staff and patrons alike, who's come into the library this fall.
...for those of you who are new to the library, for being so enthusiastic and helpful, attending training sessions and jumping in and doing all the many and various jobs we can come up with around here.
We really couldn't do it without you!

Our first big display is up for the year. Oct 4-11 is Banned Books week, and Katie and Louise have put together a wonderful display of banned books. Stop by and take a look and see how many you've read... you may get a few surprises!

Just FYI, there is more training being planned - on a volunteer basis - for those who are interested. Plans are to keep sessions about 30 minutes, with a pizza meet & greet at the beginning, so if there are some folks you don't know that you'd like to meet, or if you have a burning desire to know more about, say, catalog numbers, keep an eye out and details will be coming soon. Planetarium Re-opening

The M.D. Anderson Planetarium at Lambuth University will reopen on Saturday, February 9, with state-of-the-art equipment. Dr. Lawrence Krauss will deliver the keynote address at 4:00 p.m. in the planetarium. Artwork by the visual arts students will be on display in the planetarium. Prior to the main event, the library will host a showing of two films from its DVD collection - "Welcome to Mars: NASA's Ongoing Search for Life Beyond Earth" at 1:30 p.m. and "The Dark Side of the Universe" at 2:30 p.m. Displays in the library were created by our fine student staff. Come spend the afternoon on our beautiful campus and learn about our universe.

The library is very excited to add a new link to its webpage. Listed under campus links, the link, Vote411.org, which is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, is an outlet that allows patrons to register to vote in the upcoming general election. Anyone who wants to vote in the election in the Fall has up to thirty days prior to the election to register. This link also allows currently registered voters to make any necessary changes to their registration status.

Vote411.org is a very user friendly link. Anyone may go online and go to the library homepage to click on the link Vote411.org. This useful link also gives the user valuable information such as candidate information, eligibility requirements, election dates, early voting information, and information about polling places. The site has other resources to campaign finance reports and information on all the candidates. For more information on the various candidates, you may go to their individual webpages. Fall Is Here And Winter Is Coming!

It is official; fall is here. Take a look outside, and you'll see all of the beautiful fall foliage associated with this time of the year. Thanksgiving is a week away, and Christmas is around the corner. In the library, we have a couple of new displays that you can check out.

One is about the importace of volunteering, which includes a list of things that you can gain when you volunteer and a list of groups and organizations (with particular attention to Jackson/Madison County) that are good to volunteer for.

The other display is titled: It's Your World, Help Change It and includes a quote from Henry David Thoreau: "One is not born into the world to do everything, but to do something."

Randy Flanagan at the LU Library

Lambuth Alumni Randy Flanagan, who recently published a book of poetry titled "Pictures From The Heart, A Collection Of Poetry," visited the LU Library on Wednesday, October 23. After giving a speech about his life and experience while at Lambuth to both students and faculty, Randy answered questions and autographed his book for those present. Homecoming 2007

This weekend the campus is bustling with activity. Thursday night, Dr. and Mrs. Zuker hosted Lambuth's Community Open House from 5:00 to 7:00 . The open house was a rousing success. Guests enjoyed a picnic meal on the quad and were entertained by the Entertainment/Music Industry Studies students and music department performers. Also, the open house was the occasion for the rededication of the R.E. Womack Memorial Chapel, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Alumni coming for Homecoming 2007 will be impressed with all the improvements that have been completed on Lambuth's campus. Homecoming weekend is a great time to re-connect with old classmates, former professors, and old friends. Join everyone for the game at 1:30 on Saturday for the homecoming game against Belhaven college. GO EAGLES!!

Spooky Halloween

The library has been busy decorating for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Ghosts are in the air; pumpkins are floating around, and our own huge spider, Gobbel, is hard at work spinning his web. The witch is back and even Rachel, the bride in the basement, is getting into the act by putting on her own witch hat.

New in the library

There are two new displays in the library to come and check out. We have a wall display commemorating the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown. The book display is features World War II and a selection of books about the war. Stop in and see these great displays. Katie, John, and Erin have done a great job working on them.

Also, you may want to come by and check out new additions to the library's collection. We have added the new book by former president Clinton entitled, Giving, Nixon and Mao, several award winning children's books, and the new series by Stephenie Meyer in the young adult collection. Look for a review of the Meyer books in an upcoming Library newsletter.

Also, we're adding to the "Lambuth's Best Friends" bulletin board featuring all our four-legged pals. If you have a photo of your "best friend," come by the library and put up a photo of your pet. We'd love to see the cuties who are special to you and your families.

Hope everyone is off to a great start this semester. Homecoming is fast approaching, many improvements have been made in the library and all over campus, and fall break is just a little over a week away. Everyone study hard for mid-terms and continue to check the blog for news from the library.

Summer Projects at the LU library

The library has undergone a transformation. There is now a garden spot in front of the library with benches. The windows of the library and front doors have been painted and a handicapped door is now in place. Inside the library, the upstairs bathrooms have been painted and the ladies room has been redecorated.

The library also had a month long book sale, which netted the library around $1800.00. New books and materials for the library will be purchased with the proceeds of the booksale. The media center also acquired a new television/DVD player combination.

Now the library is getting ready for the beginning of the term and gathering materials for Orientation.

Trivia Question: What is the name of Thomas Jefferson's home?

The library wishes to extend congratulations to our reference librarian, Sammy Chapman, on receiving the James E. Ward Library Instruction Award at the Tennessee Library Association annual conference in Chattanooga. Kudos to Sammy for the excellent job he does working with the students and faculty of Lambuth.

Also, in the library...

The student staff has been shelf reading the entire collection . As of today, all sections have been completed with the exception of 1, and the students are working diligently to finish before the end of the semester.

As a part of National Library Week, the student staff celebrated National Library Workers Day with a pizza party. Lambuth library has a great group of young people, and the library staff is really appreciative of all their efforts.

On display this month...

Dr. Marion V. Creekmore, Jr., Visiting Professor of History and Political Science at Emory University in Altanta, will be the speaker for this year's commencement exercises. To learn more about Dr. Creekmore and his book, A Moment of Crisis, visit the library and check out the displays the students have created.

In an effort to prepare for the upcoming inventory, all library items are due on May 30.

Lunch with the Pros

The Lambuth University School of Business and Economics started the "Lunch with the Pros" series in 2001. The school invites distinguished business people to speak to students in an informal setting during the lunch hour. The meetings take place in the Jack Morris Ballroom of the Wilder College Union. Discussions begin at 12:15. The speakers explain career opportunities in their areas of expertise, how they prepared for their careers, and what they think a student needs to do today to prepare for a career in the speaker's field. There is a question and answer period to allow students to ask the speakers specific questions. All business majors and those considering majoring in business are encouraged to attend. "Lunch with the Pros" is an excellent opportunity for Lambuth students to learn and make contacts which may be helpful after graduation.

In conjunction with "Lunch with the Pros," this month's display in the library features the Nestle company and its CEO Joe Weller. Stop by the library and check out the display created by Katie, Valerie, Jane, Louise, and John.

West Tennessee Choral Festival

This week Lambuth University is hosting The West TN Choral Festival. Approximately 1800 students composing about seventy choirs are on campus Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29.

Also this week a celebration honoring the Lady Eagles and their NAIA Championship win was held on the quad. Students, faculty, and staff as well as community members and leaders enjoyed a barbeque and celebrated with the Lady Eagles.

Celebrating Women in Media and Literature

This month is Women's History Month. Student workers in the library-Jane, John, Louise, Joy, Valerie, Katie, Kym-have created two new displays to highlight women and their achievements in the fields of media and literature.

The wall display features twelve women who have had and continue to have a significant impact on these two areas. Women in media include: Molly Ivins, Barbara Walters, Maureen Dowd, Jane Pauley, Diane Sawyer, and Katharine Graham. Women in literature include: Adrienne Rich, Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Flannery O'Connor, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison. The Washington Post publisher, Katharine Graham, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for her autobiography, Personal History. Eudora Welty won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for fiction, The Optimist's Daughter; Toni Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved in 1988; the Pulitzer Prize was also awarded to only female New York Times op-ed columist, Maureen Dowd in 1999 for her commentaries on the Clinton administration, and Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for The Color Purple in 1983. Barbara Walters, co-host and executive producer of The View, helped pave the way for women in broadcasting by shattering the glass ceiling to become the first female co-anchor on the evening news and garnering interviews with world political leaders such as Anwar Sadat, Fidel Castro, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Bagin, and every United States President and First Lady since Richard M. Nixon. The wall display gives a brief biography and photograph of each of these women.

The second display in the library houses books by many of the featured women such The Bell Jar, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Sula, Beloved, and The Letters of Emily Dickinson. The display also features quotes and pictures of our featured women in media and literature.

Lambuth University is a Government Documents Depository. LU receives approximately 27% of the documents available from the GPO (Government Printing Office). Lambuth became a Federal Depository for Government Documents in 1967. This is another excellent resource that the library provides for its students, faculty, and staff. Patrons can search government documents using the library catalog or go to the depository website by clicking on the link. Tribute to Langston Hughes

The answer to the last trivia question is: Langston Hughes

Hughes was a leader in the Harlem Renaissance. An activist and poet, Hughes was also a playwright, novelist, and newspaper columnist. His first piece of jazz poetry, When Sue Wears Red, was written while he was still in high school. Hughes attended Columbia University and managed to maintain a B average. He left Columbia and finished college at Lincoln University where he earned a B.A. The poet was award a Litt.D. in 1943 and a second honorary doctorate would be awarded to him in 1963 by Howard University.

Langston Hughes spent time during the early 1920s in Paris as a part of the black expatriate community. Hughes died on 22 May 1967 from complications after abdominal surgery related to prostate cancer. He was 65 years old.

The Library Celebrates the Harlem Renaissance

Throughout the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month. On display in the library are the works of many of the creative minds of the Harlem Renaissance. In the early 1900s, particularly 1920-1945, the movement began to flourish in Harlem, a section of New York City. This African-American cultural movement, the Harlem Renaissance, also became known as "The New Negro Movement." More than a literary movement, the Harlem Renaissance exalted the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined African-American expression.

The main factors contributing to the development of the Harlem Renaissance were African-American urban migration, trends toward experimentation throughout the country, and the rise of radical African-American intellectuals. Not only did the Harlem Renaissance transform African-American identity, but it also transformed American culture in general. Never before had so many Americans read the thoughts of African-Americans and embraced the African-American's community productions, expressions, and style.

The wealth of talent includes: writers, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, and Langston Hughes; painters, John T. Biggers, Romare Bearden, and Palmer Hayden; and entertainers, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and Jelly Roll Morton.

Although the Harlem Renaissance is widely known as a period of flourishing creativity, the Harlem Renaissance also helped lay the foundation for the Civil Rights Movement. Many black artists coming into their own creatively after this movement would take inspiration from the Harlem Renaissance.

Come by the library and see the display on the Harlem Renaissance; the display contains books and films from the 1920s-1945. Thanks to Jane Switzer and all the student workers for their hard work in creating the display.

Winter Friday morning at LU

The Lambuth Eagle Men's Basketball team won its game, which makes the team record 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The team is currently ranked 5th in the conference. The Lady Eagles are tied for the lead in the league; they defeated Bethel 80-76, and they share the lead with Freed-Hardeman. Congratulations to both teams!!

The book talk/signing with Eddie Ashmore was yesterday and was enjoyed by those who attended. Look for further news on upcoming book signings and discussions coming in Febuary.

Welcome back to campus. Classes have begun, and reserve materials are being added to the shelves in the library. The library has several exciting events scheduled for the Spring semester. Check the blog and the library newsletter for announcements.

The library will be hosting a book discussion by Eddie Ashmore, former Vice President for Business Affairs at LU, on his book, Tennessee Lawman: History of Men and Women Behind the Badge, on Thursday, January 18th at noon. In his book, Mr. Ashmore has recorded a history of Tennessee law enforcement before Tennessee was a state through the early years of the millennuim.

The library also has A Chronicle of Law Enforcement in the South: The History of the Jackson, Tennessee Police Department--the story of bravery and duty of the law officers of Jackson, TN, which is also written by Eddie Ashmore.

Upcoming events in the library will be posted on the blog, so check in to find out what's going on in LU's library.

Christmas Break

Sorry to any of you who keep up with the blog. It seems that the website being used for the blog was experiencing problems, so the last two posts did not get published.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday break. We have approximately two more weeks of classes. For seniors working on Senior Theses, come by the library to get help finding sources, using MLA format, and other questions. You can also look on the library's website for MLA help.

The coming weeks will be a mad rush of getting papers written and studying for the approaching final exams. Be sure to check the library door for the scheduled open hours during this critical time.

First Ladies of the United States

Once relegated to the primarily ornamental role of hostess to the President, the office of the First Lady has undergone somewhat radical changes throughout the history of the United States. Many early First Ladies avoided the limelight associated with national politics while contemporary First Ladies give interviews, campaign for their husbands and other party members, and pursue their own political agendas. The modern First Lady occupies a suite of offices in the East Wing of the White House and employs a full-time staff of personnel, who aid her in crafting her position on various issues. The First Lady also provides counsel to the President and, on some occasions, may serve as a diplomatic liason between the nation's top executive and other heads of state.

Many First Ladies have earned undergraduate degrees, many have earned graduate degrees, and former First Lady and current United States Senator from New York, Hillary Rodham Clinton, holds a doctorate in jurisprudence from Yale, served as faculty in the University of Arkansas School of Law, and was a practicing attorney with the Rose Law Firm. Also notable, former First Lady, Rosalyn Carter, conversed in Spanish while conducting diplomatic talks with leaders from Latin and South American countries often served as President Carter's emissary to these countries. Also, in another first, current First Lady, Laura Bush, delivered her husband's weekly radio address; the topic was the plight of women of Afghanistan under the Taliban.

Over the couse of time, the role the First Lady has become more and more complex. No longer is the First Lady considered merely the wife of the President; today's First Lady fulfills her duties as hostess, wife, and many times, mother while also playing a substantive role in the shaping of policy and contributing to the legacy of husband, the President.

The public is invited to hear Carl S. Anthony speak and share interesting First Lady facts and stories, including three First Ladies from Tennessee: Mrs. Andrew Jackson, Mrs. Andrew Johnson, and Mrs. James Knox Polk on Thursday, November 9th in the Hamilton Room, Wilder Student Union. His talk begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by an informal tea at 2:30 p.m. featuring First Ladies' recipes for canapes and sweets as served to world dignitaries visiting the White House.

Carl Sferrazza Anthony is the nation's foremost expert on America's First ladies and their White House experiences. Mr. Anthony has written at least ten books, including one on Jackie Kennedy Onassis. His latest book is Nellie Taft: The Unconvential First Lady of the Ragtime Era.

November 7 is Election Day. U.S. House of Representative seats, U.S. Senate seats, Senate and House seats, and governorships are up for grabs. This election has become controversial with many candidates using less than flattering ads about their opponents. There is a reason for the mudslinging and negative campaigning--each party is trying desperately to gain control of the U.S. Congress. The Senatorial races in Tennessee, Virginia, and Missouri are hotly contested and being watched closely by both parties as a win in any of these states could swing the balance of Congress to one party or the other.

Voting is not only a right but also a responsibility. All citizens should exercise their right to vote. Casting a ballot is one of the options citizens have in order to make their voices heard.

Events at the Lambuth Library

The Lambuth Library hosted a book signing/talk yesterday by Dr. Cynthia A. Bond Hopson at 12:15. Dr. Hopson is a former University of Memphis journalism faculty member who now serves as Assistant General Secretary for the Black College Fund and Ethnic Concerns for the Division of Higher Education at the United Methodist Church's General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Dr. Hopson earned her Ph.D. in Journalism from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and is the author of books including Wiggle Tales: A Collection of Hopson's Haywood Columns from the Brownsville States-Graphic and Bad Hair Days, Rainy Days and Mondays: Wison and Encouragement to Lift a Woman's Spirit. She spoke yesterday to an enthusiastic group composed of Lambuth students and alumni, faculty members, and guests about her book, Times of Challenge and Controversy: Voter Registration in Haywood County, Tennessee, 1960-1961: A Content Analysis of Local, Regional, and National Coverage. The book signing/talk was well attended, and many came out to enjoy Dr. Hopson's presentation and signing of her book.

Displays for the month of October include famous October birthdays. Included in the display were books authored by or written about Luciano Pavarotti, Senator Hillary Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Desmond Tutu, Ezra Pound, and Friedrich Nietszche. The display ran through October 19th.

The library is decked out for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Currently on display in the library are books and leisure videos for Halloween. These books and films are available for check out in the library, so come by and check out the display for these "fright-filled" materials. Book titles include: Frankenstein, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Bird's Nest, The Salem Witch Trials, and Monster. Leisure video titles included in the display are: "The Ring," "The Exorcist," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," and "Altered States." Thanks to John Osbourne and Katie Rast for their help with the displays.

The first display for October is up. Making the display were Noah
Webster, Gandhi, Dwight D. Einsenhower, Picasso, Hillary Clinton, and Dan Rather. What do these famous people have in common? The were all born in the month of October. The display showcases works written by or about these influential people.

Today is Columbus Day. We celebrate this day in honor of Christopher Columbus, Spanish explorer who is credited for finding the New World. On October 12, 1492, a sailor aboard the Pinta, one of Columbus' three sea-faring vessels spotted land, which turned out to be an island in the Bahamas. This voyage marked the beginning of an era of Euporean exploration and expansion.

At LU today, the October 9th edition of "Weekly Tidbits" is out. Pick up one on campus and see what's going on.

What a difference two days make...

The campus has truly started to look like it might be Autumn after all. A cold front moving across West Tennessee has issued in what feels like cooler weather at least for a day or two. Leaves are turning and starting to fall on campus making the lawn look like a multi-colored carpet of gold, red, and green.

A second display is being constructed in the library using famous or influential people born in the month of October. Check out the display table for copies of books such as Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morals or the autobiography of businessman, Lee Iacocca, former CEO of the Chrysler Corporation. These books will be on display for most of the month of October.

Tuesday and it's supposed to be Autumn

It appears that we have another few days of hot weather even though the calendar has officially declared it to be Autumn. Maybe we'll have something that resembles "football" weather before football season is officially over!

The answer to the last trivia question is the hardest mineral in the world is reported to also be, at least according to Marilyn Monroe, a girl's best friend--the diamond.

As writing and research paper assignments are being given, LU students should remember that the library is an excellent resource for gathering research materials. The library has many scholarly journals, magazines, and periodicals as well as databases and many, many books. The library staff will be glad to aid you in searching the catalog.

The style guides for MLA, APA, Turabian, and Chicago are on permanent reserve at the circulation desk if you should have questions about how sources should be cited properly. Also, there are handouts in front of the reference desk on each of the styles. When using sources, remember not to plagarize. Cite each source properly. When writing a paper, it is best to use summarizations and paraphrases and use quotations sparingly for emphasis. Always consult your instructor for any special instructions when beginning a writing project.

Friday Morning and Senior Seminar Papers

Bustling with activity, the computer lab in the library was filled to capacity with seniors doing last minute adjustments or crunch-time-write-your-paper-in-3-hours on what appeared to be their first writing assignment for Dr. Dennis' Senior Seminar class. The library handbook and the library webpage can be valuable resources when trying to figure out how to properly cite a source. A link to the library's webpage is on the blog. Also, on permanent reserve is a copy of the MLA style book. There are also handouts available in the reference section of the library.

I really didn't make that up. The library caught a second raccoon, Luther 2. Seems as like Luther 2 was not as please to be captured as his predecessor. He had a rather unpleasant disposition. He's been set free along with Luther 1.

Good Morning Lambuth U!

Maintenance caught a second raccoon on Thursday, whom we'll call Luther 2. Luther 2 expressed a bit more displeasure at being caught than did his predecessor. As of this writing, no new raccoons or other animals have been caught in the live trap.

The dark rainy ambiance on this Monday at LU should bring people to the library in droves. What a good opportunity to curl up somewhere in the library and study or read a good book.

It seems the library has a new "mascot" of sorts. Although no one has officially named the raccoon, which is a male, it seems only fitting that he be called "Luther" in honor of Luther L. Gobbel. Reminder--Banned books week is the last week of September.

Today, as the students register for class, the faculty will be working hard to get the students ready for the academic year. The library is hosting an opening reception. Faculty and staff are invited to drop by for a bite to eat and to see new additions to the Lambuth library.

Scampering Squirrels on LU's campus

It's Wednesday morning, and the squirrels are lively and playing on LU's campus. It appears that we have a new addition. Two "blond," for lack of a better descriptive term, squirrels have previously been spotted on the campus, but this morning, a lighter-colored much smaller version of the little animal appeared scampering about. The almost tame animals are but one of the many things that give Lambuth's campus its unique charm.

The Word for the Day: "torpor," a noun, which means "apathy" or "dullness."

U.S. News and World Report ranks Lambuth University as the 27th university (Comprehensive) for undergraduates in the South. Rhodes in Memphis also made the cut for best liberal arts universities.

Rainy Monday morning

It is a rainy Monday morning at LU. Not a gloomy one though. The library staff is working hard to get ready for the coming semester. The faculty reception is set for Friday, and everyone in the library is looking forward to seeing the faculty back on campus

The answer to last Wednesday's trivia question is Andrew Jackson. Jackson and Dickinson had agreed to race horses. At the last hour, Dickinson withdrew his horse from the competition. Jackson, enraged by his behavior, challenged Dickinson to a duel. After taking a shot to the ribs from Dickinson, Jackson shot and fatally wounded Dickinson on May 30, 1806. Jackson, a notorious brawler and dueler, was elected to the presidency of the United States in 1828 and re-elected in 1832.

It's just another manic Monday?

The last days of summer are dwindling. Students have already gone back to school, and the big yellow/orange (some indeterminate shade of one or the other) buses are rolling/stopping picking up anxious or petulant children on their way to school. Most universities and colleges are ramping up for registration, and college students are getting all their gear ready for another year on college campuses. Autumn also brings football, and LU's team is already on campus getting ready for the coming season. According to the local news, the team is looking to improve over last season's 4-6 record; go Eagles!

The Jewish Collection in the Lambuth library has Jewish historical information. The collection also has a great deal of information about the ancestry of people of Jewish descent in the Jackson area. Popular books by renown writers such as Elie Wiesel and other authors are available for check out. When you're in the library if you haven't seen the Jewish Collection, ask at the circulation desk.

Another hot August day in Jackson. The Lambuth campus is coming to life with the sounds of the returning football players. Everyone is keeping former Lambuth linebacker, Johnathan Frazier, in their thoughts. A memorial service is planned for sometime after the students return to campus.

From The Christian Science Monitor-Interesting Way of Relieving Stress: As you are entering college, you are almost sure to endure the stresses and rigors that go along with being a college student. Although there are many ways to reduce and relieve stress, the Indian army has implemented an usual method of stress management for its troops.

Six hundred thousand Indian troops are currently deployed in Jammu and Kashmir. Every morning at 6:30 a.m., the soldiers gather under the shade of a giant Chinar tree and practice the ancient art of yoga. Many of the soldiers claim that practicing yoga has not only relieved stress (in often times unbearable situations) but also focused their minds and helped to reduce family tensions. Yoga combines stretching muscles, holding prescribed poses, deep breathing, and ridding the body of negative energy. Yoga makes the mind as well as the body more alert and sharper.

It's just another summer day as the library staff works to get everything ready for the return of students. Classes begin on August 29.

Word for the Day: ubiquitous-(adj)-being everywhere at the same time; ominpresent.

Reading hint for the day: If you see any word which begins, "bibli," or uses some form of the prefix, you should know that the word has to do with books. "Bibli" is the Greet root for book. Some of its derivatives are: Bible Biblicist, bibliography, and bibliophile.

From The Wall Street Journal: The Maryland School of Medicine conducted a study funded jointly by the U.S. Army and the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders on the use of galantamine, a drug used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's, in treating the victims of poison by soman and sarin gas. In the study, laboratory rats were used as test subjects. The animals treated with galantamine suffered fewer side effects from the nervous system toxins, one of which was used in the 1990s subway attacks in Japan. Soman and sarin attack the central nervous system and cause respiratory distress. When the test animals were treated with a combination of galantamine and atropine, the animals showed no adverse side effects after being exposed to soman and sarin gas.

The suffixes, “mit,” and “mis,” come from the Latin meaning “to send.” Modern day usages of these suffixes are dismiss, admissible, commit, emissary, omit, or permit. Sometimes knowing a part of a word is helpful when learning new vocabulary.

Word for the Day: malerific-(adj) means evil.

An Interesting Bit of Historical Trivia:

Early in the birth of our nation, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were good friends and shared a great deal of philosophical letter writing and collaborated in the writing of the Declaration of Independence, though Jefferson, ultimately penned the document.

Adam’s election as POTUS, however, split the friends almost irreparably. Jefferson had paired up with James Madison in an effort to undermine Adam’s efforts at passing legislation and governing as he believed was outlined in the spirit of the Revolution. In the process of all his subterfuge, Jefferson somehow got a few items published that hinted at Adams being a bit of a fuitcake. Eventually, the two former friends ran against each other in the third presidential election, and with Madison’s assistance with the “Adams as a fruitcake” campaign, Jefferson won. (Possibly the birth of political mudslinging?) The election marked a period of total silence in their friendship.

Beyond this slight on his person that Adams felt Jefferson had done (besides being totally unsupportive of a friend during his presidency), Adams was beginning to resent the popularity that Jefferson and Washington enjoyed as a result of their involvement with the development of the nation. Adams was jealous because Jefferson had merely penned a document that reflected Adams’ philosophy and goals. Adams felt like a bit of a limp dishrag being neither the author of brilliant prose nor the warrior for a nation. At some point during this period, Abagail Adams, John’s wife, began corresponding with Jefferson despite the animosity between her husband and Thomas Jefferson. Abagail’s writing, while being a friendly pastime, was also an attempt to bring two old friends to reconciliation. This pursuit ultimately won over the two men, and Jefferson and Adams, late in the lives, picked up their pens and once again enjoyed lively banter and debate through correspondence.

Adams, on his death bed, said, “Thomas Jefferson still survives.” Adams had no way of knowing that Jefferson had died at 9:50 AM on the same day Adams would later succumb to death—July 4, 1826.

Our summer workers are working their last day today. We will miss them when they are gone. The library staff wishes Bobby and Lauren the best possible luck in all their future endeavors. Both of you are wonderful people and have bright futures ahead.

Paul, we will see you this fall on the court and hopefully, working in the library.

The video collection has been moved from the back office to the first floor in reference. The videos and DVDs are on carosels and are now part of the circulating collection. Also new in the library is Lendon Noe's altar piece of St. Theresa of Avila. The altar piece is a beautiful work of art commemorating the life of St. Theresa. Come by the library and see it.

We have also added some new videos to the collection for student leisure viewing. These videos were donated to the library. The titles include:

We are busy in the library getting things ready for the fall term. We are sad to see our student workers go; they have been so great all during the summer. Thanks, guys and Lauren! She is returning to Popular Bluff, Mo. and will pursue her career in broadcasting. Bobby is headed back to Las Vegas and is awaiting word from football prospects. last day of book sale

Today is the final day of the book sale. We've done really well and want to thank everyone who helped with the sale and everyone who came in and bought books. The money we made will allow us to buy new books for the library.

We are beginning to get ready for the start of the fall semester. Soon the LU campus will be filled with students.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that all the items available in the booksale and now HALF PRICE. The book sale will continue until Friday, July 21, and the hours are 9AM until 4PM. We would like to thank everyone for coming by the library and supporting us during our booksale. We have another week to go, so if you haven't been by the library, come by and check out the items we have on sale.

The media room has successfully been relocated, and our student workers, Paul and Lauren, have been really wonderful working on this move. Bobby has been busy working in Government Documents. We really appreciate all the hard work Paul, Bobby, and Lauren have put in this summer.

The library staff is looking forward to the fall semester and seeing students back on campus when the semester begins.

Another summer reading suggestion: A Mysterious Spirit: The Bell Witch of Tennessee by Charles Bailey Bell. A movie was made this summer called An American Haunting about the Bell Witch.

LU Library New Blog

Student workers and staff will use our blog to keep the LU community informed about what's going on in the library. This blog will also serve as a means for library workers to communicate with one another and with the staff.

During the month of July, the LU library is having a book sale. The proceeds will be used to buy new books and equipment for the library. Come on out and get some great deals at our book sale. The sale begins on July 8 from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will then keep the booksale going Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. until 4:00 the week of July 10-14. The booksale will continue the week of July 17-21 from the hours of 9 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Come by and have a look at the large selection of books we have for sale.
